Coffee Packaging & Labeling 101 for New Brands

Coffee packaging protects roasted beans from the air, light, and moisture that stale them, while the label tells the buyer (and the law) what is inside, who made it, and how much they are getting. For a new brand the two jobs are inseparable: a beautiful bag with a noncompliant label cannot ship to retail, and a perfect label on the wrong barrier lets coffee go flat before it sells. This guide covers bag anatomy, sizes, stock-versus-custom tradeoffs, required label fields, barcodes, and claims to handle carefully.

What is inside a coffee bag, and why does it matter?

Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for days and degrades quickly in oxygen, light, and humidity. Good packaging is engineered around those facts.

  • One-way degassing valve. A small valve lets CO2 escape so the bag does not balloon, while keeping oxygen out. This is what allows coffee to be bagged within days of roasting rather than waiting for it to off-gas.
  • Barrier material. Most quality bags use a multi-layer laminate with a foil or metalized layer that blocks light and slows oxygen and moisture transfer. Kraft paper looks natural but almost always has a hidden foil or poly liner doing the real work.
  • Closure. A tin tie, zipper, or heat seal lets customers reclose the bag. Zippers feel premium; tin ties are economical and recyclable-friendly.

Which bag size should your brand use?

Size signals price point and use case. Smaller bags lower the shelf price and suit sampling or gifting; larger bags serve cafes and heavy home users. Our standard sizes are 4 oz, 10.5 oz, 12 oz, 3 lb, and 5 lb, with custom options available.

Stock bag with a custom label, or fully custom printed bag?

This is mostly a decision about speed versus polish. A stock bag with a custom sticker gets you to market quickly; a fully custom printed bag looks unmistakably yours but costs more and takes far longer to produce.

A common path is to start with stock bags, validate which blends sell, then reinvest in custom printing once volume justifies it. With a white-label partner, roasting and fulfillment stay constant while only the packaging changes.

What must appear on a coffee label?

Beyond branding, a compliant retail coffee label carries specific information. At minimum, plan for:

  • Product name. What the coffee is, for example "Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, medium roast."
  • Net weight. The amount of coffee, usually shown in both ounces and grams (for example, 12 oz / 340 g).
  • Business name and address. The responsible party, typically the brand owner or distributor.
  • Roast date or best-by date. Freshness is a selling point in specialty coffee; many brands print the roast date to lean into it.

One important point: label compliance is the brand owner's responsibility. A white-label roaster produces and packs your coffee, but you own the accuracy and legality of what is printed on the bag.

How do you prepare label artwork for print?

Getting artwork right before print saves costly remakes. A few specifications matter most.

  • File format. Most label printers want vector files (PDF or AI) so edges stay sharp at any scale. Embed any photography at 300 dpi minimum.
  • Color mode. Use CMYK, not RGB — colors shift when converted at the printer, and CMYK lets you soft-proof accurately before approving.
  • Bleed and safe zone. Add at least 0.125 inches of bleed beyond the cut edge and keep required text inside the safe line so nothing gets trimmed.
  • Dieline template. Build artwork inside the dieline your printer provides so you know exactly how the label sits on the bag before committing to a run.
  • Barcode zone. A barcode needs adequate quiet-zone white space and a minimum print size to scan reliably — confirm this with your printer before finalizing dark or patterned backgrounds.

Ask your white-label partner early what file specs their printer requires — catching mismatches before the first run is far cheaper than correcting them after.

Do you need a UPC barcode?

You do not need a UPC to sell on your own website or at a market, but retailers, distributors, and grocery require one because their point-of-sale systems scan it. Each distinct SKU needs its own code — a 12 oz and a 4 oz bag of the same coffee are two UPCs, and a different roast level is a third. Brands typically buy a small block of codes up front and assign one per SKU. If retail is on your roadmap, plan for barcodes in your label design early.

Be careful with organic, fair-trade, and other claims

Certification claims like "USDA Organic," "Fair Trade Certified," or specific origin guarantees are regulated and require documented certification through the relevant body. Do not print them unless the coffee and supply chain are actually certified and you hold the paperwork. Unsubstantiated claims are a compliance and trust risk.

The same caution applies to health language. Phrases like "boosts focus" or "supports metabolism" can cross into regulated territory. Stick to describing what the coffee tastes like and where it comes from.

What are the sustainable packaging options?

Sustainability is a growing purchase driver, but high barrier performance and compostability remain in tension. Common options include recyclable mono-material bags (single plastic family, easier to recycle), compostable or bio-based films (lower landfill impact, shorter shelf life, higher cost), and kraft bags with recyclable tin-tie closures for a natural look. Whatever you choose, label it precisely — "recyclable" and "compostable" have specific meanings, and certified composting often requires industrial facilities.

How do you design a bag with shelf appeal?

On a crowded shelf, a bag has about a second to communicate. Keep the brand and coffee name legible from a few feet away, use color to signal roast level at a glance, and leave room for a barcode if retail is on your roadmap. Design for the actual bag format — a label that looks right on screen can feel crowded on a 4 oz bag. Retail-ready also means physical practicality: bags should stand or hang as retailers expect, seals should survive shipping, and case packs should be consistent.
